A train, a bus, and a ferry
Last night I boarded a train at 8 pm headed south. It was an ELEVEN hour overnight ride to Surat Thani. Because I did not book in advance, all sleeper cars were taken, as were 2nd class seats. All that was left were 3rd class seats with no recline, very little padding, and no AC. Part of the experience, right?!?! Fortunately, I did have an entire grouping of 4 seats all to myself. Not having air conditioning wasn't too big of a deal either - the breeze from the window felt great.
I had movies and music downloaded, slept some, but not a lot. In Surat Thani I had to wait about an hour and a half, then I boarded a bus headed for the coast. That ride took about an hour and a half. Once at the ferry terminal, I had to wait another hour and a half to depart for Koh Phangan.
The ferry ride, of course, was the best part! Just over two hours across clear turquoise waters and I made it. In total, the journey took me about 18 hours!!!! I am absolutely NOT taking that route when leaving here, but it was a cool experience all in all. The price was unbelievable: about $22 total.
And now, I'm here. Paradise. Koh Phangan is ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! My beachfront cottage is so cute and has a great view from the porch. However, you will have to wait for the next post to see those...
